Our 420 Stainless Steel Grades

AISI 420 Stainless Steel

Martensitic stainless steel balls with high hardness after heat treatment and moderate corrosion resistance. Suitable for applications where strength, wear-resistance, and dimensional accuracy are essential.

AISI 420C Stainless Steel

Higher carbon version of 420, providing improved hardness, wear-resistance, and fatigue strength after heat treatment. Ideal for precision bearings, valves, and high-load mechanical assemblies.

Manufacturing & Supply

We stock and supply 420 stainless steel balls in standard and custom diameters from 0.5mm to 100mm, with various hardness levels and finishes. Balls are available heat-treated, annealed, or machined to order.

Why Choose 420 Stainless Steel Balls?

420 stainless steel balls are ideal for applications where high hardness, wear resistance, and dimensional precision are essential. They are commonly used in environments that would degrade carbon steel or softer alloys but do not require the corrosion resistance of 316.

Key Benefits

  • High hardness and wear resistance after heat treatment

  • Good dimensional stability and fatigue strength

  • Moderate corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive environments

  • Suitable for precision bearings, valves, and mechanical assemblies

  • Wide range of diameters, tolerances, and finishes available

  • UK-based supply with full traceability and quality control

Within our stainless steel offering, 420 provides a cost-effective alternative to premium high-alloy steels where hardness, wear, and precision are more critical than maximum corrosion resistance.

Useful terms and definitions

Batch or Lot:

A defined quantity of balls manufactured under conditions presumed to be uniform and which is considered an entity.

Nominal Ball Diameter:

The diameter value that is used for the general identification of a ball size.

Single Ball Diameter:

The distance between two parallel planes tangential to the actual ball surface.

Diameter Tolerance per Batch:

The allowed difference between the smallest measured ball diameter and the largest ball diameter within the same batch or lot quantity.

Sphericity:

A measure of roundness expressed as the difference between the measured roundness of a ball and a theoretically perfectly round ball.

Surface Finish or Roughness:

A measure of the texture of a surface. It is quantified by the vertical deviations of the actual surface from its ideal form. If these deviations are large, the surface is rough; if they are small, the surface is smooth.
